It may seem like I was in Vermont a lot longer than I actually was, but that’s because the car was jam packed with clothes. In November 2018 I went to Vermont for the first time, and I absolutely fell in love with the mountain views. I had just started my first semester at Rutgers University while working full time and I was super stressed and needed a relaxing getaway. That’s when I fell in love with Vermont, the mountain views, and I realized that connecting with nature helped me recharge to power through the last weeks of the Fall semester. I’ve always wanted to visit Vermont during Fall, and this year I was finally able to. I made sure I didn’t have any assignments due and no exams, and I jam packed the car with outfits to create as much Fall content to last me all Fall (since I go to college and I work full time, I have very limited time, so content batching is vital to stay consistent). I would have loved to stay longer, and to experience more things, but the girls and I had a great weekend trip.

WHERE TO STAY:

Since we booked our trip a bit spontaneous, most Airb&b places were already booked in the Manchester area. But we found a great hotel for a great price – the three ladies that I traveled with, we stayed at the Black Bear Mountain Lodge (here), which is about a 25 minute drive from Manchester Center. The hotel room was spacious, had a great view, and the staff was wonderful. I had contacted the front desk a week prior to ask a bazillion questions, and Alisha, a front desk agent, was super friendly and welcoming. Fun fact: In 2015/16 I worked at the Hilton Garden Inn as a front desk agent.

WHAT TO DO:

I’ve done a lot of research on what to do in Manchester, and these are a few things that I found. Unfortunately, we did not have enough time to do everything, because we were there for only two days, but if you have time it’s totally worth checking these spots out while you’re in Manchester.

*The Equinox Pond
You have to visit the Equinox pond, especially during Fall. The colors are just simply breathtaking, and the view is incredible. The pond is located near the base of Mount Equinox, and the area and the surrounding land are part of the Equinox Preservation Trust, established in 1996 including more than 914 acres of land. You can’t park right by the pond, because it is protected land. But you can walk up from the Equinox Resort or park at the West Union Street Entrance.

*Mount Equinox Skyline Drive
We did not have time for this unfortunately, but if you do, take a little road trip up the Mount Equinox Skyline Drive. You can hike up the mountain, but if you’re not up for a long hike, you can take this toll road and enjoy the serene mountain views from your car, and stop along the way to admire the views.

*Lye Brook Falls
Vermont offers different hiking spots, and one of them is the heavily wooded Lye Brook Falls trail which runs for 2 miles through the Lye Brook Wilderness close to Manchester. Close to the end of the trail you’ll find a 125-feet waterfall, which is one of Vermont’s highest and most impressive waterfalls. [click this link for directions]. WHERE TO EAT:

General recommendation: If you are in Vermont, try hot Apple Cider, and the real Vermont Maple Syrup!

*Bob’s Diner
After exploring the Equinox Pond we went to Bob’s Diner. The menu offers a variety of foods, whether you’re looking for something savory or sweet. I ordered the Stuffed French Toast with cream cheese and berries, and I tried the real Vermont Maple Syrup (or syrup in general) for the first time ever, and it was SO good. The service was amazing (everyone is Vermont is SO friendly!) and we also met Bob, the owner; he was so kind and welcoming! I will definitely be back when I go back to Manchester!

*Union Underground
For dinner we had so many options to choose from, and we decided to go to the bar & grill Union Underground. I had the Maple Thai Chili Salmon, and OMG it was SO good!

*Up For Breakfast
For breakfast on our last day we went to Up For Breakfast in downtown Manchester. The restaurant is small and intimate, so make sure you make a reservation, because it gets crowded. Also note – make sure you stay and don’t miss your reservation 🙂 I had the Cinnamon Raisin French Toast with the real Vermont Maple Syrup and the food was also amazing!

GENERAL TIPS

When you are traveling to Vermont you definitely will need a car. If you’re flying to Vermont I’d suggest flying into Albany and rent a car from there. If you’re traveling to Vermont by car, then you’re all set. Everything is very spread out, and to be able to visit different areas of the state you will need a car, that’s the easiest and fastest way to get around in Vermont; especially if you want to do the Mount Equinox Skyline Drive. No matter during what season you’re traveling to Vermont, make sure you check the weather app and pack accordingly.

As Fall is my absolute favorite season, I have been wanting to travel to Vermont during Fall. Since I was very busy with writing papers and studying for exams, the first weekend I was able to go away was Thanksgiving weekend, after the first snow had already fallen in Vermont.

When I arrived in Vermont I was speechless – actually, I jumped around like a little kid in a candy store. I couldn’t decide where to look first and was just so excited to finally be in Vermont. I was absolutely mesmerized by the snowy mountains, the landscape and architecture – Vermont literally looks like Winter Wonderland.

Since I had never been on a winter vacation before, I wasn’t quite sure what exactly to pack. All I was sure of was that I needed a million layers, cozy warm knit sweaters and fuzzy socks. Right before my trip I ordered a pair of Sorel snow boots and I am so happy I did. They kept my feet super warm and dry, so I was able to fully enjoy Vermont (because let’s be honest, we all get a little grumpy when we have wet and cold feet). I brought 2 other pairs of boots, but they never saw daylight. Lesson learned – next time only snow boots 😀

The Vermont trip was the perfect time-out I needed from the busy New Jersey and college life. This was definitely not my last trip to Vermont – a Vermont travel guide will follow in the future 🙂 What is one of your favorite relaxing places to travel to? xx Joelle
